Serial to TCP/IP


The smart grid is an IP network. Many older devices, however, only have a serial port. Using these devices in the smart grid requires converting their communication to TCP/IP.


Converting the serial data stream to TCP/IP


The serial port on the devolo G3-PLC Modem 500k makes it possible to connect devices which only have a serial port for data communication. The G3-PLC Modem converts the serial data stream into TCP/IP packets. Devices can be connected to the PAN client (G3-PLC Modem 500k) using RS232 and RS485. The G3-PLC Modem 500k converts the data into IP data, encrypts them automatically and modulates them onto the power line. At the local substation, the PAN co-ordinator (G3-PLC Modem 500k) receives the data and forwards them to the router via the Ethernet interface. This ultimately creates a reliable and secure end-to-end connection from the installed device to the energy provider.

Network management and network monitoring


Retrofitting is an important topic in network monitoring and network management. Many installed measuring instruments and switching devices can be used only over a serial port. Replacing this kind of special technology is quite expensive.


Retrofit in the smart grid


Older technology can also be integrated into the smart grid by using the serial port on the G3-PLC Modem. The G3-PLC network extends the serial port through to the network operator. This ensures remote access.

A set of large building complexes might contain a large number of meters for entire floors or individual flats for different sections which are able to connect to a network via serial RS485 bus. To date, however, the annual process of recording the consumption values on site entailed massive personnel expenses.
